Backlogs are Bastards

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Over the past few months, Read: since February, I’ve spent quite a few chunks of money and bandwidth either buying DVD’s or the fansubbed series (Don’t even think about starting a fansub discussion, I will give you a one way ticket to the river Styx.) This has all accumulated into quite an impressive collection, but leading to quite a damning situation.

Now for anyone in the real world, for example anyone who works full time and doesn’t live in their parent’s basement. The day is short enough as it is. Throw in friends, family, tending to adult matters and anything else the amount of time left to watch any Anime is surprising short, let alone write about it.

This results in one mammoth of a backlog that would take me around about 25 days of 24 hour marathon watching. Now who can do that? I have DVD’s still in shrink wrap, files that (more…)

Angelic Layer 1-6

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

It was just a few minutes since Misaki left Tokyo train station before she was swept up into the world of Angelic Layer. Staring at the live fights on a huge outdoor screen Misaki quizzed the two kindergartners next to her, only to find that she really was out of her depth. With the help of her mysterious new friend Mr. Icchan, who looks like he’d be more at home as a university lecturer rather than a boffin behind Angelic, Misaki takes one more step into her new life with her aunt in Tokyo.

I started watching this show with no preconceptions at all. I didn’t know what it was about, what genre it was, how good it would be. All I knew was that it was 26 episodes long and had a cool name. After finishing episode 6 I’m happy enough (more…)

Steamboy

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Ray was your usual aspiring inventor, always tinkering around with machines, looking at how they worked. After all it was in his blood, the third generation of the Steam family. One day a package arrived from America. It was sent by his Grandfather Lloyd. In it contained a mysterious ball, blueprints and a note. Not long after the package arrives some strangers from the O’Hara foundation appear at the Steam residence. Trouble is not far behind.

Based in 19th century Britain, Steamboy is one of the most epic Anime films to date. The story takes place around Ray Steam and his challenge to stop greedy scientists and war mongers. Their intentions are to turn inventions created to help mankind against each other. The setting is The World Exhibition in London, a prestigious event showcasing (more…)

REC

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Plot Summary: Fumihiko Matsumaru is an average salaryman with no girlfriend. He invited his colleague Miss Tanaka to a movie but was stood up. Right at the time he was about to toss tickets into a trash can, a cute girl appeared and asked him not to waste those two tickets. After movie and dinner, he escorted her home and found they live in the same neighborhood, yet unfortunately her apartment caught on fire hours later. Having nowhere else to stay, rookie seiyuu Aka Onda moved to Matsumaru’s place, and the two had started a “more than friend but not yet lovers” relationship under the same roof while keeping this secret from their employers.

If you’re looking for a new comedy/drama/slice of life/romance anime to watch then i would suggest this. REC is a great blend of laughs and tears with a cute Nekoki (Cat-Tree) thrown in. Although the series is very short, 9 x 12 minute episodes, it gets alot covered. There is no mindless filler here or episodes where nothing happens. Every episode there is something interesting (more…)

Midori Days (Midori No Hibi)

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Seiji “Mad Dog” Sawamura is your typical bad boy high school student, often found daydreaming and staring out of the window; his grades aren’t the best in class. He is also an impeccable fighter with the help of his “devil’s right hand” and has the habit of attracting trouble. Being rejected after confessing your love is never a good thing (after 20 times I may add) and things don’t look any better for our underdog hero Seiji as he wakes up one morning to find Midori Kasugano in place of his right hand. This inseparable couple forms the basis of the 13 episode series and covers the many everyday adventures as they struggle to keep their secret from being discovered.

The characters in Midori No Hibi are varied and somewhat predictable for your standard romance anime. Seiji is the double edged sword, on one hand he is seen by his peers as a fearless and intimidating fighter with no respect for anyone (more…)
