Kanon 2006

I’ve added a new catagory, everything in the “Other Review” section are my peices from forums and other sites and not like my other reviews about specific environments. Enjoy!

Now I’ll be honest here, when I first started watching Kanon there was nothing that smacked me as wow! I didn’t see what the majority of the hype was about and why people were raving about it. I thought the animation was ok, but then again what Kyoto product isn’t these days? The soundtrack I though was lackluster and somewhat boring, it just didn’t feel to me like it fitted. I did however enjoy the characters from the word go, while they may have had the generic backdrop their personalities were brilliant from the start.

As time went on and I started watching more episodes the things that I didn’t like at the beginning were slowly ironed out. The animation seemed more fluid in the later episodes than the start, the overall (more…)

Ergo Proxy - Half Time Thoughts

In the future the world has come to an abrupt halt. After a severe nuclear apocalypse the seas have frozen over and the sun is blocked out by thick dense clouds. Unable to survive in such inhospitable conditions a new dome city called Romdeau was erected, allowing humans and their robotic servants or autoreivs to live in harmony. All is not what it seems in this new age utopia. After a spree of mysterious murders inspector Real Mayar from the Citizen Information Bureau and her autoreiv partner Iggy are handed the task of solving these cases.

After very little progress Real is attacked at her home by neither an android nor human, we later find out it was a PROXY. Something that the government of Romdeau believes holds the key to the survival of mankind. A connection is made with Immigrant Vincent Law, an average Joe trying to become a model citizen in order to live in Romdeau and the chase begins. (more…)

Full Metal Panic - The Second Raid

I’ve been debating for a while what show should I actually start off with. It’s a pain in the ass trying to find something to create a good foundation for this blog, but I think I’ve found it.

Full Metal Panic is the third series in the FMP franchise. It’s set two months after the events in the original FMP and follows the tales of Sousuke, Kaname and the rest of the cast in the fight against another evil terrorist group. It’s a mixture of Mecha, High School comedy, Action and a splash of drama. It isn’t emotionally deep or inspiring, but it’s a bloody good watch.

The animation in FMP was done by the exceptional Kyoto Animation Studio and their experience and dedication to detail really shines in this series. Jouji Unoguchi was the Art Director for this series. Some of his other works include Kanon TV 2, Tenchi Universe, Air and T.M.O.H.S. So on paper it already looks like an excellent pairing.

One of the things I enjoyed most about FMP was the attention to detail put into almost every scene. Whether it be outside fighting in some city landscape, inside the cockpit of one of the Armor Slaves(mecha) or in the high school. About 90% of these scenes have had an amazing level of detail put into them. There are a few places lacking more than others though. (more…)
