Steamboy
Ray was your usual aspiring inventor, always tinkering around with machines, looking at how they worked. After all it was in his blood, the third generation of the Steam family. One day a package arrived from America. It was sent by his Grandfather Lloyd. In it contained a mysterious ball, blueprints and a note. Not long after the package arrives some strangers from the O’Hara foundation appear at the Steam residence. Trouble is not far behind.
Based in 19th century Britain, Steamboy is one of the most epic Anime films to date. The story takes place around Ray Steam and his challenge to stop greedy scientists and war mongers. Their intentions are to turn inventions created to help mankind against each other. The setting is The World Exhibition in London, a prestigious event showcasing the marvels of the modern day world (at the time of course)
To go into the story in any more detail would probably give a way a few bits of the plot, which I don’t want to do. You really need to go into this film without many preconceptions otherwise you’ll miss out on some of the finer points. But before I continue I’ll go so far as to say I really, really, really enjoyed this film on many levels. Overall I’d have to give this an A, for reasons which ill explain in a bit.
But you only need the jist of the plot and everything else falls into place, there’s no layers to dig through or mind boggling script to decipher. It’s developed in such a way that it can appear to both adults and children. Obviously for us adults there are the issues of war and the uses of technology. Then for the kids you get someone like Ray and Scarlett to let their imagination run wild with.
One of the things that caught my attention was the quality of the script. Honestly, for a Japanese studio to get the dialect of both Manchester and London spot on is something that boggles my mind. This ties in neatly with the dub cast, and there’s some Hollywood A list talent here most notably Patrick Stewart and Alfred Molina, but they have all put in brilliant performances to really bring Steamboy to life. The only one I wasn’t too keen on was Anna Paquin doing the voice of Ray; I would have preferred a young British actor doing it rather than some Canadian girl. That’s not to say she does a bad joy, I just would have preferred that. But as with everything in Steamboy the god is in the details. Even the background voice actors all fit so well with the story, there is not one voice that is out of place.
One thing that was faultless was the score. To me it done everything a proper musical track should. It was uplifting when it needed to be, it added excitement and tension to scenes and when it all kicked off your ears are treated to orchestrated genius. Obviously the music suits the time period with, but thinking back there is not one piece that sticks in my head. Now I’m not sure if that’s good because it shows my attention was all on what was happening on screen or that the music was good, but nothing stuck out with that “wow” factor. You all know what I’m talking about, something like the Imperial March in Star Wars or the Indiana Jones theme. Song’s that are in the background but you can still remember them after the films finished. But even with that in mind the music to compliments the animation perfectly.
I don’t want to touch on the art too much, I’m going to be doing a full review on that in the next week or two as there’s so much to dig into. All I can say is that visually, this film is nirvana. Each scene has been done to eye watering detail; this really carries the wow factor and sets the standard for animation insanely high. There is a small amount of CG used in STEAMBOY, but they have done well to blend it in and kept its use to a bare minimum. The animation of both the world and characters capture the charm of the Victorian era brilliantly.
Overall I was thoroughly impressed at the end of the film. But like many others I felt that it started to drag on towards the final half hour but it was a very satisfying end. Looking back on Steamboy I can see why it was the most expensive Anime film ever made (Somewhere in the region of $20 million U.S) But again this is money well spent and somewhat a bargain compared to its western counterparts. It’s hard to pick faults with Steamboy as I really enjoyed it, it’s just a fun film that captures the time period perfectly and sends us all on a nostalgic trip to the good ol’ days.
Did Steamboy live up to the hype of the next Akira? I think Katsuhiro Otomo gets a resounding yes from me. If you haven’t seen Steamboy yet, what’s stopping you?
